The America Eats! desk is experiencing a pile up of scribbled Post-It notes, bills, wayward manuscripts, books, a hammer, two screw drivers, a drill, and several drill bits in a house that’s in a somewhat more than its usual disheveled state. Things need to be put to right. As promised by the sign, I’ll return next Tuesday by 10 AM with a fresh story and plans for expanded offerings in 2022!
In the meantime, I thought you might enjoy this piece from one of my favorite weird food sites, Gastro Obscura. It’s about the Rock Food Table, an arrangement of rocks that look amazingly like a lavish feast.
The rocks were gathered by Bill and Lois Pattillo, a husband and wife team who enjoyed scouring the Texas landscape for interesting rocks and became fascinated when they came upon specimens that, in their natural state, looked exactly like food. Since the Rock Food Table’s public unveiling in 1983, donations from fellow collectors have expanded to three separate tables offering breakfast, lunch, and dessert. It is now tended by the East Texas Gem and Mineral Society. I can promise you it’ll make you just a little hungry.
