Ms. Georgia Gilmore Didn't Let Anyone in Montgomery Protest Hungry
First issue of the Saturday America Eats! shorts series
Welcome to the first installment of America Eats! shorts. We’re going to need a lot of help being happy this year so I thought I’d provide readers with something to smile or feel good about on the weekend. It will sometimes be weird, often hilarious, or, like this first installment, a buried treasure to savor.
Georgia Gilmore is one of the glories of the Civil Rights Movement in Montgomery, Alabama. The best way to hear Ms. Gilmore’s story is to listen to the people who knew her tell it. NPR’s “The Kitchen Sisters” put together a marvelous bowl of voices that does just that. It was first broadcasted in July, 2005.
Help spread your love by pressing the little heart above. You’ll be supporting my work in a very meaningful way and also helping America Eats! to have a presence on Substack.
What a heartening story, Pat. You're right--something we needed to hear this weekend!
So many surprising and inspiring phrases in those few minutes, what a life. It makes me happy she lives on. Great start for your Saturday shorts.
