Saturday News Digest, V1, E24
I didn’t get a chance to do anything this week except to write Tuesday’s story (see P.S. below for an important correction to the story). I also made a pot of saffron consommé for my sister, Sue, who came down with a lousy cough (not COVID, and she is recoupering). And now I’m in Philadelphia heating up the consommé, fluffing pillows and generally doing what my sister needs her sister to do. This is my excuse for failing to gather a batch of Digest stories for you today.
Until next Saturday, enjoy this film by George Albert Smith, one of the leading early filmmakers and a pioneer in special effects. It’s called Mary Jane’s Mishap. Smith had a spiritualist bent, which doesn’t help Mary Jane at all. The actress is his wife, who hopefully got paid double.
Oh, and one more thing: I cannot go without giving a hardy applause for the New York State Fair’s butter sculpture. This beautiful work of art is entitled Refuel Her Greatness—Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Title IX.
And the P.S correction to Tuesday’s story: The great canoe-trip cook would like you all to know she was not carrying a .38. It was a .357. That’s an indication of how not in my element I was on the Upper Missouri River. Another in the party wrote in to add that she remembers the .357 had a pearl handle. So there you go, another bit of equipment to add to your canoe packing list!
