Like Sandy, I add walnuts, maple syrup or brown sugar, always raisins and a dollop of really good yogurt. I lived in New York for quite a few years and did not know the history of Dead Horse Bay. Fascinating!
Yogurt! I'll try that! My sister just yelled at me that our mom did make us instant. Stir jams and preserves into it--also cinnamon sugar. God love big sisters
I'm start to think of oatmeal as a blank slate that can bloom in wonderful tastes.btgank you! I'm getting there, pulling on my bootstraps for what's coming!
I'm glad your husband takes such good care of you! I like oatmeal with raisins and walnuts. It is a brisk day for a walk, especially along the water. Bundle up!
If you time your visit to Dead Horse Bay during a super low tide you will get so much more beach to explore! It is amazing the number of soles strewn about, and ancient Clorox bottles, and the less exciting modern soda bottles that float up on the beach, many partly filled with a mysterious yellow liquid. You make me want to visit again!
Did they close it for some stupid idea like it's toxic? I heard that. I'll find out. Do you have any theories about the soles, though? I've always found them so endearing in a way. I tried to walk further in along the beach to see mif anythning remains of the factory and workers house. Have you done that?
I see that it has -- since 2020! For leftover radioluminescent deck markers used by the Navy! Seems like you could sneak in from under the bridge, but who knows?
So great that you have someone making you oatmeal with love! Wishing you a speedy recovery from your cold, Pat. I hear the weather may be challenging for taking walks where you live. Still, good to know that you are feeling better. I actually like oatmeal when it has a few goodies added. As a rule, I save fresh fruit to add to vanilla cashew yogurt or a dry cereal with soy milk. For oatmeal I add some chopped nuts, usually walnuts and either a sprinkle of raisins or dried cranberries. I usually make it with boiling water in a large mug that I cover for a few minutes before adding some soy milk. :-)
Thanks, Sandy, and it is, indeed, cold and blusery--so cold the car battery died so I'm not going anywhere. Being house bound is the worse thing! I'm with you on yogurt and dried fruit, tho, and will try dried fruit. Kicking the scrapple habit is very very hard!
My dad had fond memories of scrapple as a kid, too. My mom, not so much. So we never had it when i was growing up and it is still a mystery to me. Love having things still to try for the first time!
BTW - I can highly recommend InstaCart to pick up most things for you!
Take care Pat and be happy you have a nice warm house to take comfort in. With an oatmeal chef none-the-less! :-)
Blueberries--freeze-dried or frozen, preferably from Maine (those are the little "wild" ones, packed with antioxidants)--that's what you want in your oatmeal. You've inspired me for tomorrow's breakfast, Pat. And inspired me to go a-walking too. Thank you!

Aww, Pat, the sweetness of the oatmeal! 😊
Starting to see how much!
Raisins and coconut and a sprinkle of Grapenuts does it for me. Feel better soon, Pat. You’ll need all your strength to face the year. 🩷

He's a keeper! Raisins and walnuts sounds like a keeper, too.
