This is really fun. I'm so glad you stop at historic markers. I don't know if you knew the late great Alice Arndt who was an occasional traveling companion of mine, and we ALWAYS stopped at historic markers. The pie descriptions are fun.
My dad enforced the requirement to read every historic markers to the point that I think his children's cars automaticallystop on their own . I 'm ashamed to say I don't know Ardent but I will soon-I just ordered one of her books./
Love everything about this post Pat! Firstly, how you and your brother get along. It's great to see how well you travel together. And thanks for all of the links for the details of the Markers! I thought I knew something of our history. You have shown me that I have soooo much to learn! As to the pies...mmmm truly hope you find something a little more special on your way home! :-)
We all make fun of my brother for being perfect, just like our mom believed and his wife and children, when he isn't annoying them, agrees! Wait until you read about the last marker we found--it tells this shocking story I'm still trying to wrap my head around. That's what I love about these signs, they're tiny stories that throw so much light on who we are! You will also find our great reward of two incredible pies and a wonderful waitress. Pretty perfect.
I will be back for sure. This is just too fascinating. I wish you'd come to Maine next time. We have several excellent pie stops. I see Sandy Oliver commenting here--she will have good Maine advice too.
Oh, wait until Part 2 and the horrible, unthinkable thought of never wanting another pie again! (meanwhile, I just made a peanut buitter and chocolate pie)

Another fun and interesting installment! I have to say Pepto Bismol is still my go to for over indulging!
I'm so glad you like it! Makes it worth the amount of Pepto and all the other stomach stuff on the market we took!
Really enjoying this series, Pat. And now I’m really craving some peanut butter-chocolate pie! Looking forward to your next post!

I'm thinking in spring!
Kindly pick me up next year. 🥧 🚗
Ladies road trip!
🙌
Alice's Culinary Biographies is really a terrific book -- made it to the NYT Best 100 food books one year
I'll pick that up too! I'm told by Nancy Jenkins that you know a ton of places to check in if I drive up there. Sounds like a good plan
“The waitress is thrilled when we lie about liking it. Then we head off to our room, take several swigs of Pepto Bismal, and sink into sleep.”
I about bust a gut reading this, Pat! Sounds like you did too…for different reasons. 😉

A fun read with my morning coffee. It's good to know that small, independent diners still exist. Look forward to your pie recipe!
It proved quite a mess but my peanut butter and chocolate pie taste tester loved it
