Today's the Day the Country Began to Regain Its Union
Bears repeating, especially for Abraham Lincoln and a holiday tart.
I fear this is probably one too many stories this week. This one, though, is a throw back to a piece I wrote on this day in 2022. It commemorates the anniversary of the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Historians mark it as the major turning point in the war. Union causalities amounted to 23,049; Confederates, 28,063.
But this wasn’t the center of the story. Instead, it’s the address Abraham Lincoln gave four months later. I know the Pledge of Allegiance will be recited and the Star-Spangled Banner will be sung tomorrow. It would be more beneficial for what our country is going through now if this short speech was read out across the land.
And it could be accompanied by a very nice American tart.
July 3, 1863: Gettysburg Saved the Union

Between 4 and 6 p.m., approximately 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were killed, wounded, or captured, of the more than 50,000 who would eventually die in this conflict. It has long been understood to be among the bloodiest days of a war that tried to tear the nati…
I agree that the Gettysburg Address should be read on this most American of holidays, especially at this fraught moment when our democracy is in such peril. That tart also sounds like a classic. Thanks, Pat! I hope you have a happy Fourth.🇺🇸
Pat you are so right about reading and sharing Lincoln's Gettysburg address today! And perhaps tomorrow, too and maybe even regularly throughout this crazy time, until 'We the People' wake up! You are so very appreciated for reminding me of how insightful Lincoln was about the poor capacity of humans to learn from history. Good on you to bring what we really need to remember on this day!!!
And the American Tart is appreciated, too! :-)
