Pat! This is such a great post! We are the same age and a friend and I were laughing the other day about Kristin Scott Thomas’s Fleabag menopause rant. Spoiler if you haven’t seen it: “It is horrendous, and then it’s magnificent” — when it’s over. Brilliant writing, hilarious and true message, Pat, thank you.
I remember her saying that! Thank you for the compliment but I find the most wonderful thing about what you said is the great joy we're waltzing together!
I read some where that when the actress Gena Rowland was asked what the secret of looking great in your 70-90s are sunglasses and red lipstick! I never thought I'd say this but, isn't lipstick remarkable?
As I saw it, I could get old or I could die young. So I decided I'm OK with getting old. And that means I've gone through menopause. It was a pain in the ass and now I'm mostly on the other side and I can, at least, take a hot shower again without combusting. :-D
Love it and welcome to the other side! My husband once told me that sleeping beside me was like a furnace. You can imagine the response he got from that.
What a brilliant post, Pat! When I was going through it, I felt I couldn’t talk about it (see, I don’t even mention the word!). Now that I’m passed it, I’m a little bitter to find out menopause is having a moment. Your aunt definitely had the right attitude. If I make it to 90, I’m going to yell out my front door too (and get myself some of that lipstick!). Heck, I might start right now!
Oh, I can rant for hours on this moment. I mean, come on, throwing at us Nicole Kidman, Demi Moore and the woman in the novel everyone but me is swooning over-- "All Fours"--and a bunch of others is pretty infurating! I never wore lipstick either but, after my aunt died, I took the 7 tubes of Cherries in the Snow in her makeup bowl. Now I put it on whenever I go out and I have to say it makes me feels pretty fabulous even in my usual stained tee-shirt/sweatpants ensemble!
I just put a hold on “All Fours” to see what all the fuss is about. I’m totally with you, Pat, on feeling alienated from the vision of aging women we’re expected to embrace. But why should that come as a surprise? It’s as old as civilization and applies to women at every stage of their lives from birth to death. I’m all for warrior women. Instead of aging, they should be raging—and wearing whatever color lipstick they please!💄💋🫦
Let me know what you think of the book! My response to it could be an example of my curmudgeonous. It's funny and well-written but didn't really say anything interesting new. Maybe I'm not hip enough, or too old, not that this should matter. My all time favorite book with an aging woman is Colette's Break of Day. Anyway--put on that lipstick, Miss!
Going to get that shade! Need a bit of color on my lips and in my heart! I’ll let you know what I think of the book. I like your curmudgeonousness! Keep it up!
J’adore Colette, but haven’t read Break of Day. Now I will! Thanks, Pat !

XO !
Blessings on you, Pat!
Right back at you, Nancy!
My former boss, who is now 93, used to say that any day that he wakes up is a good day. Today is a good day!
And we're here together, my friend!
This is great, Pat! I love that you received such a huge response to your comment. The older I get the more I rely on a bright pop of lipstick.

Indeed!

Another book I'd love to talk about with you!
Love this post, Pat! Everyday when I wake, I say the words "It's another wonderful day!" and it helps me jumpstart into making my day the best I can.
Well that explains how you do all the wonderful and generous things you do in a single day!
You clearly are at your best, Pat!
Ha! Thanks for the vote of confidence!
