Lovely of you Pat (and Mr. Carl Sontheimer) to share this recipe and the details of making a treat that would be so welcome when one is feeling unwell or just down and in need of comfort! Must say, it would certainly have blown a hole in your 1950's $40 a weekly grocery budget! But, at least there were probably plenty of eggs for sale at a decent price! lol
I can see what you are saying, that the recipe may seem complex but can be done over the course of a day and yield a treasure for relief when needed in small cupful's over a few days. And love the idea of soothing a soar throat with a crushed ice smoothie made from it! Looking forward to any other treats you might share from your A Soothing Broth!
I made this for a friend and she just told me it was like a warm hug and isn't that just what you want when you're not feeling so good? That $40 was in the 80s and I have to say scrounging around shopping was kind of fun back then...plus a lot of the dishes were egg based, so there's that. I'm in the midst of trying to republish Soothing Broth on my own. Those recipes and stories may come in handy with our new health secretary.
Aww how nice for your friend! Bone broths are kind of a 'thing' now and I am sure this broth is very nutritious! I don't know what I was thinking when I typed 50's! Even I was just a little kid then. lol Great idea to republish your book!!! Will you be doing anything different? Oh yes, we are going to need all of the help we can get health wise. I have just up dated both my flu and Covid shots. Phew!
Good for you about your shots! We're all a little addled these days--I didn't even know bone broth was having a moment but then I can't remember what day it is without looking at my multiple calendars around this house. I think I will have to update the book some to take in the last years. All the recipes are from the 18th to early 1920s but they (mostly) work. The thing about them is learning how to care for one another by looking at how we did it when there wasn't much of a health system, and medicine and doctors were not always there or unreliable. It hit a nerve when it was published so we'll see. I hate publishing these days.....
I had never of this publication! Clever, indeed, to promote the Cuisinart with recipes. Thanks, Pat.
Carl died a monthy or two after I phoned him. He just loved talking about the magazine.
